Choose the airport after choosing the first or last night. Hiroshima Airport has the straightforward city transfer for most Hiroshima trips. Iwakuni Kintaikyo Airport can make a west-to-east route smoother when you fly from Haneda and sleep on Miyajima first, but the flight and ferry times must actually connect. A shorter-looking line on a map does not settle the journey.
There is a current timetable limit to respect. As of 24 October 2026, Iwakuni Airport's English flight table still labels its Haneda and Okinawa schedule as valid only through 23 October. It cannot establish flights for later travel. Search the airline for your exact date and use a newly published airport timetable before building a hotel plan around Iwakuni. The former five-Haneda-plus-one-Okinawa pattern is historical until the next period is confirmed.

First or final destination | Likely airport to compare first | What could change the result |
Hiroshima Station hotel | Hiroshima Airport | A much better Iwakuni flight or price after ground costs |
Peace Park or central Hiroshima hotel | Hiroshima Airport | Iwakuni flight timing may offset a longer city transfer |
Miyajima overnight from Haneda | Compare Iwakuni | Arrival must still reach JR, ferry and accommodation on time |
International flight | Hiroshima Airport route options | A connecting itinerary through Haneda might compare differently |

Flight availability sets the choice
Iwakuni's published English table for the previous period showed five daily Haneda services and one Okinawa service in each direction, ending 23 October 2026. Those numbers describe the old period. Flight availability for a later departure must come from the airline and the next timetable. This is the first filter because no ground-route advantage can compensate for a flight that does not operate on your date.
Compare the complete air journey too. A traveller arriving internationally may find Hiroshima Airport's scheduled connections or an onward domestic route more natural than adding a Haneda transfer just to land farther west. If Iwakuni is cheaper or arrives at a better hour, include the extra connection, baggage rules and airport-to-hotel transfer in the comparison. The airport code alone cannot show the full cost.
Once both flights are real options, put their landing times next to the ground schedule. Early afternoon arrival and a late-evening arrival are not interchangeable for a Miyajima ryokan. The direction may be identical, but one preserves dinner and the other can push you to a mainland first night.
A Miyajima night is the strongest Iwakuni case
From Iwakuni Airport, the trip can move through Iwakuni Station and Miyajimaguchi to the ferry. That is directionally tidy for a first night on the island, followed by Hiroshima city later. It avoids entering central Hiroshima and doubling back west. The advantage is most valuable when you will use Miyajima's quieter evening and early morning rather than only making a daytime excursion.

Build the entire arrival chain before booking: leave the aircraft, collect bags, take the airport bus or another transfer to Iwakuni Station, catch JR toward Miyajimaguchi, reach the ferry, then get to the accommodation. A ryokan dinner deadline belongs in that chain. The old Iwakuni table included a Haneda arrival around 21:40; that kind of late landing is not a realistic way to secure an unhurried island dinner, however close the airport appears on a map.
If the ferry or check-in does not fit, stay on the mainland and travel to Miyajima the following day, or choose another flight. The Hiroshima versus Miyajima one-night guide helps decide whether an island hotel is worth restructuring the airport day. Make that overnight real before rewarding Iwakuni for proximity.
Hiroshima Station rewards the direct bus
Hiroshima Airport's limousine-bus links reach Hiroshima Station. For a traveller arriving with large bags, that can mean one vehicle from the terminal to the city's main rail hub. A station-area hotel then supports a Shinkansen departure the next morning without another cross-city move. This is a simple itinerary, and simplicity has value after a flight.
Iwakuni can still win if the air schedule or fare is materially better. But its position west of Hiroshima means a city-station hotel requires travel east after landing. The difference is not merely kilometres: it may include a bus, a train and local walking with baggage. Decide how much the alternative flight improves the day before accepting those handoffs.
If the hotel area is undecided, use the Hiroshima Station versus Peace Park comparison first. An airport transfer should end near the place where you will actually sleep, not at whichever transport terminal is easiest to find on a map.
Central Hiroshima calls for a hotel-specific check
Hiroshima Airport also has a bus to the central Bus Center area, useful for hotels around Kamiyacho and Peace Memorial Park. Iwakuni has published a direct bus toward the same central area in some schedules. That makes the comparison closer than a station-only map suggests, although the exact operating date and bus times still matter.

A traveller with one small suitcase may accept a longer ride from Iwakuni for a flight that lands much earlier. Someone arriving late with a child and two large bags may prefer the direct Hiroshima Airport transfer even if the flight costs somewhat more. These are examples of how itinerary shape changes the choice, not claims that one route always takes the fewest minutes.
Use the actual hotel's nearest stop and check the last bus after the scheduled landing. Taxi cost matters if the final airport bus has gone. On the outward journey, build a generous airport arrival margin before the airline's bag-drop deadline rather than timing the connection to the scheduled departure minute.
Departure works backward
An arrival day can absorb some delay; a departure day has a fixed airline deadline. From a Miyajima final night, count backwards through hotel checkout, the ferry, JR, airport bus and check-in. Iwakuni is geographically closer to that western side, but an early flight may force you to leave before the breakfast or morning island time that justified the hotel.
If the chain is tight, move the last night to Miyajimaguchi or Hiroshima city, or choose a later flight. A convenient airport is only convenient when its departure time preserves the stay. A mainland hotel can be the safer answer even if the island hotel was right for the previous night.
For a Hiroshima Station final night, a direct bus to Hiroshima Airport is usually easy to reason about. Still check the service for the flight date and leave room for traffic or baggage procedures. International flights and separate tickets may need more margin than a domestic point-to-point journey.
Separate tickets deserve a particularly conservative plan because a delay on the first leg may not protect the next booking. If the trip finishes on Miyajima, moving to the mainland for the last night can reduce the number of required morning handoffs. If it finishes by Hiroshima Station, select the airport bus around the airline's check-in deadline with room for road delay. The hotel move is justified only when that simpler departure morning outweighs the lost island evening. An open-jaw flight does not answer this by itself; its times still have to support the final night.
Luggage can reverse the map advantage
A light traveller may barely notice a bus-to-rail-to-ferry transfer. With several large cases, each handoff becomes a separate chance for delay or fatigue. Hiroshima Airport's bus hold can simplify a city arrival. Iwakuni's western position can simplify the distance to Miyajima but cannot remove the station and ferry steps.
Compare the sequence of transfers, not only total travel time in a map application. Include the walk from the bus stop to the hotel and any stairs at the chosen station. A family that plans to forward luggage should confirm hotel acceptance and delivery timing before removing the bags from the calculation.
Test the airport choice with the first hotel night
Write down the arrival sequence as it will actually happen: flight landing, baggage collection, airport bus or taxi, the final station or stop, and the walk to the hotel. A direct bus to Hiroshima Station is useful only if the hotel is there or an easy continuation away. A Peace Park address may point toward the central Bus Center instead. If the first night is on Miyajima, the ferry becomes another timed leg after the land transfer, and the island accommodation's check-in and dinner arrangements may matter more than a small difference in airport distance.
For an Iwakuni arrival, confirm the flight and the airport-to-rail or city connection for the actual travel date before placing the Miyajima ferry behind it. The airport's western position is attractive on a map, but a thin flight schedule can erase that advantage. Conversely, a flight that reaches Iwakuni early enough for an unhurried island transfer may leave more of the first evening than a later Hiroshima Airport arrival. Compare complete door-to-door itineraries with the hotels you would really book, rather than comparing airport pins alone.
Open-jaw flights need a truly directional trip
A Haneda–Iwakuni arrival, Miyajima stay, Hiroshima city stay and Hiroshima Airport departure can form a neat west-to-east route. The reverse direction may also work. The benefit is avoiding a late return across the same ground, provided flight schedules and prices remain sensible.
Do not force two airports into a short itinerary for a small theoretical saving. A round trip through Hiroshima Airport may reduce booking complexity, luggage moves and uncertainty. The open-jaw version earns its place when the hotels and ground route already move in one direction.
For most Hiroshima city stays, begin with Hiroshima Airport. For a Haneda flight and a confirmed Miyajima overnight, compare Iwakuni after establishing a flight for the exact date and a workable ferry connection. As of 24 October 2026, do not use Iwakuni's old English timetable to promise later flights. The next schedule is the first fact a future booking needs.
After choosing the arrival airport, compare Hiroshima city rooms for that arrival route and check whether the onward Miyajima leg belongs on the same day.
