The two hotels solve different winter problems. JR Tower Hotel Nikko Sapporo attaches to the station; that matters after a flight with cases and on mornings built around JR departures. SAPPORO HOTEL by GRANBELL asks for a roughly seven-minute outdoor approach, then offers a guest-included 25th-floor hot spring and round-the-clock coin laundry. For a short rail transit stay, the station connection usually does more work. Over several nights, repeated baths and laundry can make the walk worthwhile. The deciding variable is how often you will use each advantage, not the word “station” or “onsen” on a listing.
Four trips that separate the two hotels
For these four examples, the editorial fit rating weighs winter station resilience at 30%, repeated JR travel at 20%, room and luggage practicality at 15%, recovery after outings at 15%, long-stay laundry at 10%, and spa cost efficiency at 10%. The figures are planning judgments for the stated itinerary, not measured scores for either hotel. A different mix of nights and trains can change the answer.
Trip example | Editorial fit | Why that score fits the itinerary |
|---|---|---|
JR Tower: late airport rail arrival, two large cases, early JR departure in snow | The connected station approach helps at both difficult ends. | |
JR Tower: four nights spent mainly near Odori and Susukino, little JR use | The room pays for station access that seldom gets used. | |
GRANBELL: four nights with three baths and one laundry load | Guest facilities get repeated use after the outdoor walk. | |
GRANBELL: JR every morning, no planned bath or laundry | The daily station approach repeats without much hotel-side return. |
In this editorial scale, 8.5 or more is a strong match, 7.5–8.4 deserves a close price comparison, and below 7.5 means the trip is getting little value from the hotel’s main feature. Compare the actual reservation total as well; a high-fit hotel can still be overpriced for your dates.
Count station crossings before pricing the convenience
The north-side walk to GRANBELL should be counted each time it occurs, especially when snow and a full suitcase coincide. One arrival photograph on a map cannot show the cost of a week of JR starts.
Useful station-exposure count = loaded arrival and departure legs + return legs for JR day trips + late snowy returns through the station. It is an itinerary tally, not a claim that every walk feels identical.
An airport train arrival, Otaru and Asahikawa rail day trips, and a final JR departure produce at least six meaningful station passages. With two cases or icy weather, JR Tower’s connected route gets used repeatedly. If the only rail trip is the airport arrival and most evenings are near Odori or Susukino, that connection gets much less use.

Itinerary pattern | Station exposure | Which advantage grows |
Airport JR, Otaru and Asahikawa rail days, then JR departure | High | JR Tower avoids several exposed luggage or winter walks. |
Mostly Odori and Susukino, one airport train arrival | Low | GRANBELL can make sense when baths and laundry are used. |
One-night rail transit | Moderate, concentrated | A protected station transfer may matter more than long-stay extras. |
JR Tower earns its premium at the station door
JR Tower Hotel Nikko Sapporo links directly to JR Sapporo Station. The route from the east ticket gates to the hotel is roughly three minutes. The point in winter is the protected transfer after a train, especially with luggage or a fixed departure time. The hotel’s Sky Resort Spa PULAU BULAN is a separate benefit with a separate charge; the station access does not depend on buying a spa visit.
PULAU BULAN, on the 22nd floor, uses natural hot-spring water. A hotel guest currently pays ¥2,150 per person per day; admission is limited to adults aged 18 or over. Regular access runs 12:00–23:00, with last entry at 22:30. Guests also have a 06:00–09:00 morning bathing window, with last entry at 08:30; the morning use is limited to the hot-spring and jet baths. The fee covers repeat admission during the same regular day and the following guest morning window. Check whether a room package already includes admission.
The JR Tower spa charge in yen
Add a planned bath to the actual room total instead of treating both hotels as equally inclusive. Multiply ¥2,150 by the number of guests who can use PULAU BULAN and by the number of paid spa days. Two adults going once add ¥4,300; three separate days add ¥12,900. This is a booking calculation, not a prediction of how much someone will enjoy the facility.
JR Tower spa add-on = ¥2,150 × eligible guests × paid days.
↔ Scroll table left or right
Planned spa use | Added JR Tower guest fee | Calculation |
Two adults, one paid day | ¥4,300 | ¥2,150 for each eligible guest. |
Two adults, three paid days | ¥12,900 | Six person-days at the listed guest rate. |
The station connection may still justify JR Tower even when its spa raises the bill. On a rail-heavy winter visit, you are buying fewer exposed transfers; on a bath-heavy visit, GRANBELL’s guest-included spa changes the comparison. Keep the room premium and the bathing cost as separate line items so one attractive feature does not conceal the other.

November 2026 removes JR Tower’s spa advantage
The hotel has posted a repair closure for PULAU BULAN. On 1 November 2026 the guest morning bath operates, but regular daytime service is closed. Every spa service is closed from 2 through 21 November. On 22 November, the morning bath stays closed and regular service resumes at noon. A reservation within that period can still be good for station access; it cannot be valued as an available spa stay on the closed dates.
If the bath is essential on 2–21 November 2026, leave its value out of the JR Tower calculation and choose a property with an operating bath. For a stay overlapping 1 or 22 November, match each intended bathing window to the notice. These dated restrictions should be read against the actual itinerary rather than turned into a permanent assessment of the hotel.
GRANBELL repays its longer approach inside the building

SAPPORO HOTEL by GRANBELL lists seven minutes from JR Sapporo Station’s north exit and also seven minutes from subway Exit 16. Unlike JR Tower, it cannot make the outdoor last leg disappear. Its strongest return for that walk is upstairs: natural hot-spring baths and a sauna on floor 25, included for hotel guests, plus a coin laundry open all day and night on the same floor.
The GRANBELL bath admits guests from 13:00 until 25:00 and again from 05:00 to 09:00. The early window is reserved for guests; general day-use ends at 23:00. Non-guests are listed at ¥3,300, but that is not an added charge for a hotel guest. The late closing makes a return after dinner or a JR outing more useful than an amenity that stops at 21:00.
When the GRANBELL facilities will actually be used
Count intended bath visits and laundry loads on the real schedule. A three-to-five-night booking can get repeated value from the 25th-floor facilities; a one-night reservation after a late arrival might not.
A workable editorial threshold is two genuine hotel-side uses over a three-to-five-night stay. That could mean two baths or one bath and a laundry load. If the count is zero, compare GRANBELL on rate and room alone, accepting the seven-minute winter walk as a cost. The number is a decision aid, not a promise of equal monetary payback from every spa visit.

The room rate is only one part of the comparison
Price the same dates, guests and cancellation terms, then write down the costs that the reservation total misses. JR Tower has an explicit spa fee; GRANBELL can create repeated outdoor station walks. Both matter more when the same pattern occurs every day.
JR Tower full-stay trade-off: room-rate difference plus the spa days you will buy, balanced against the winter station transfers avoided.
GRANBELL full-stay trade-off: room-rate difference and repeated outdoor station walks, balanced against the bath and laundry sessions you will use.
The second side of each calculation is personal rather than a yen price. A snowy seven-minute walk with two cases may be costly in effort, while a light-bag walk after lunch may barely register. Conversely, a bath you will never enter has no practical value simply because it is included. Use the hotel total, the forecast and your trip sequence together.
Room dimensions do not guarantee suitcase comfort
JR Tower lists a Moderate Twin at 30 m² with two 120 cm beds. GRANBELL’s standard Twin has 25–26 m², two 110 cm beds and a 90 cm daybed, allowing a different occupancy setup. For two adults with bulky winter clothes, JR Tower’s extra floor space can help keep luggage out of the walking path. A third person on GRANBELL’s daybed changes the usable floor space, however. Compare the exact room floor plan and bed arrangement; the headline capacity is not a substitute for that check.
The circumstances that flip the choice
JR Tower loses part of its rationale when there are few JR movements and the connected location costs substantially more. GRANBELL becomes harder to defend when you start on JR every morning, have no plans for its spa or laundry, or arrive late with large bags in heavy snow. A single-night transit booking concentrates the station problem; a longer stay creates time for hotel facilities to repay their walk.
If most evenings are around Odori or Susukino, a third location may serve better than either of these station-side properties. Sapporo Grand Hotel connects to CHIKAHO yet stays roughly ten minutes from the JR platforms, offering a different weather-versus-distance balance. The two-hotel comparison is useful only after Sapporo Station itself has earned a place in the accommodation decision.
Winter scores for JR Tower and GRANBELL
| Dimension | JR Tower Nikko | GRANBELL |
|---|---|---|
| Location | 10/10 — Direct JR Sapporo access removes the outdoor last leg on snowy arrival and departure days. | 7/10 — Seven outdoor minutes from JR Sapporo add a repeated winter crossing. |
| Room | 8/10 — The Moderate Twin's 30 m² and two 120 cm beds leave more winter-luggage room. | 7/10 — The 25–26 m² Twin loses open floor when the 90 cm daybed is occupied. |
| Cleanliness | 9/10 — Guest-room upkeep is strong in recent independent stay records. | 9/10 — The newer rooms and common spaces have a strong upkeep record. |
| Service | 10/10 — Station-hotel staff performance is exceptionally steady across a large review sample. | 8/10 — Staff scores are good, though below the rail-side hotel's service record. |
| Facilities | 7/10 — The spa adds value only when its extra fee and November repair schedule fit. | 9/10 — Included top-floor hot spring and round-the-clock laundry pay back over several nights. |
| Food | 9/10 — Four dining choices include upper-floor breakfast with a city view. | 8/10 — Breakfast and two dining venues help, subject to the guest's early-train schedule. |
| Value | 8/10 — The station premium is easiest to defend on repeated JR mornings in snow. | 8/10 — Bath and laundry use can offset the longer approach on a multi-night stay. |
JapanLayer overall scores for a winter Sapporo rail stay: JR Tower Nikko 8.7/10 and SAPPORO HOTEL by GRANBELL 8.0/10. JR Tower's score reflects direct station access, service and dining, while GRANBELL scores best for a stay that uses its included floor-25 bath and 24-hour laundry. JR Tower's spa is paid and its announced November 2026 maintenance changes the facilities comparison on those dates.
The booking decision
JR Tower is the clearer choice for repeated rail, heavy luggage and a winter arrival where the protected station link is used immediately. GRANBELL suits a longer visit with real plans for its late hot spring and 24-hour laundry. For 2–21 November 2026, do not count on JR Tower spa access. Fix the room and date first, then tally station passages, spa days and laundry loads before paying.
